3rd Western Area Conference - Sun 23rd Oct 2016  Thirty Moose brothers and Ladies Circle members travelled to Edithmead’s Oak Tree pub for their third Western Area convention since the re-organization of UK Moose International. Special guests included the UK Moose International National President Barry Soley and his first lady of Moose Glenda Soley, plus Administrator of Ladies Circles- Lynda Griffiths

After the usual arrival refreshments, delegates who had attended from the Burnham-on-Sea, Weston-Super-Mare, Bristol and Swindon lodges, separated into their own meetings for ladies or brothers presentations and discussions. During the brothers meeting, they viewed a video presentation, where Supreme Governor Scott Hart conveyed greetings from America. This had been attempted earlier in the year at national convention in Port Talbot, but prevented by technical difficulties. Scott encouraged UK lodges to persevere, and continue to spread the philosophy of Moose.

Following a delicious buffet lunch supplied by the Oak Tree catering staff, Ladies and brothers met for a joint presentation delivered by Matthew Sproston on the life and times of George Formby. Matthew also entertained with some humorous Formby songs.

This was followed by a winding up session, ably chaired by District Liaison Officer Gareth Griffiths.

Afterwards, came the usual raffle which raised £140, supported by a huge seventy five prize table, plus the usual convention photograph, before final refreshments and goodbyes sent delegates on their way.

Cheque Presentations - Lodge 123 18.04.16

Moose Ladies Circle members  present over £9,000 at their annual changeover evening.

The end of another year, and more yet more charity funds were donated to local good causes. Burnham-on-Sea Moose lodge 123 Ladies Circle have been working hard over the last twelve months, holding coffee mornings and other fund-raising events, in preparation for lastThursday evening’s lodge meeting at Berrow village hall. Funds have also been boosted by regular charity collections at Sedgemoor motorway services and other venues.

First to receive funds were Colin and Margaret Thomas on behalf of Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance, collecting a huge cheque for seven thousand, ninety eight pounds and fifty one pence, closely followed by Lorraine Robertson and Joana Silva from Weston Hospital cardiac unit who collected a large cheque for one thousand pounds.  Other local causes followed -  each receiving £125, a schedule of which appears in notes for editors of this release.

Colin Thomas from the air ambulance remarked; ‘We thank you for this donation.  Previously we had received over £33,000 from Moose, and this cheque brings the total  amount you have all donated to more than £40,000.’  Colin went on to talk about a new initiative to include a fully trained trauma medic in the normal flight crew, and gave a short brief about the new replacement air ambulance due to come on line, with the capability to transport two patients simultaneously.

After the presentations, all there benefited from a plentiful sandwich and cake buffet, which was followed by the usual raffle

Children in Need  -   £1,213.80 was raised by collections made at the Sedgemoor Welcome Break Services on M5 North.      Chris Harris and Shelagh Fautley holding large cheque.

National Legion Day - 12th March 2016 - Brean

Another  Successful Moose International National Legion Day at Brean Leisure Centre

Saturday 12 March set the scene for a Moose International legion day, when 68 representatives and other legion members travelled to Brean, from all over the England and Wales,  for a day of renewal, and updates on the status of Moose International UK etc.

During the morning ceremonial ritual, four new members were inducted into the degree of service (Two from Burnham-on-Sea Lodge 123).  The morning session was followed by a social gathering in the main function room, and delicious roast dinner.

After-dinner toasts included an address delivered by National Legion Secretary Pilgrim Kevan Randall.  Kevan talked about  lodges and legions across the country,  and reminded those present that they were all part of an organization.  They needed to stand together, obey all the rules and not let the standard drop

Downers Grove - Dinner - Sidcot Arms 24th Feb '16 The UK Downers Grove member held their third dinner engagement at The Sidcot Arms, Winscombe on Friday 4th March 2016.  It was a very enjoyable evening and a good time was had by all.
Valentines Weekend - Weymouth - 14th Feb 2016  Moose on the Loose in Weymouth

Once again, Members of Burnham Moose lodge 123 and Burnham Ladies circle joined with other Moose International members and friends  from Swindon, Forest of Dean, Gloucester, Stroud, Dursley, Bristol, Portishead, Weston-Super-mare and Winscombe in their 16th  annual Valentines weekend holiday, to one of their favorite haunts - the Crown Hotel in Weymouth.

Entertainment was organised every evening during the half board weekend from Friday until Monday morning. The peak event of the weekend was a black tie dinner dance on Saturday evening. Over one hundred people sat down to the Saturday evening dinner, which was followed by speeches and toasts to Moose International and the Queen etc.

A massive grand draw boosted Moose Widows’ and widowers’ welfare during the Saturday evening’s dancing, and all profit from the weekend goes towards supporting welfare commitments. Sunday brought a coach trip to Lyme Regis where participants were able to stroll in the unseasonable sunshine, along the town quay, and shop for souvenirs.

Weekend co-organiser Terry Cornelius said;  “This was our third visit to the Crown Hotel, and  after the excellent standard of catering and service we received it certainly will not be the last.”

During the dinner Legion 8 President Trevor Savage , in his speech, gave special thanks to Terry Cornelius and his wife Yvonne, for their work in organising the weekend.

Moose lodge 123 publicity officer Mike Lang explains;  “The weekend used to be organised by the Moose International Western Area, but during the present re-organisation of Moose International within the UK, this has ceased, to be replaced by more concentrated smaller districts, so Moose Legion 8 has stepped into the breach, within the old Western Area, taking over some of the welfare duties.”
